Well, this article is going to really blow the lid off of the JV myth once and for all. For those of you who think that the key to instant success and millions flooding into your bank account is to get some hot shot marketer with a list the size of Texas to promote your product, you need to think again. I'm not going to name any names in this article but trust me, this would apply to any situation. After you read what I have to say, you'll understand why.
First of all, let me start off by saying that I am a successful marketer in my own right. I made over 6 figures in 2007. Granted, I am not in the same league with those who make millions, but I am successful. Well, after many years of struggling to make it to the top, I finally made a bit of a name for myself and managed to get one of the big names in the business interested in me and one of my products. I was quite honored. I was also expecting the sales to come pouring in once the emails to his list went out.
That's when reality hit home. Oh yes, I made a few sales, but nothing that was going to allow me to retire to the Caribbean. If anything, I've personally had better sale days on my own with a much smaller list. But please don't get me wrong. I am not blaming this on the person promoting my product. See, this is where people get caught up in the name and forget the most important thing...the product itself.
Did you ever stop to think that the list that my product was sent to, for the most part, wasn't interested in what I was selling? See, we get so caught up in the hype of having a big name promote our stuff that we forget the most important thing...What if the people he's sending your ad to just don't want it? Hey, did you ever hear of targeted promotion? Well, the same thing holds true for promoting to a list. You can have the greatest list in the world for one type of product and yet, for another product, they are totally unreceptive.
Then there is something else you have to understand. Most people need to see YOUR sales page about 7 times before they buy. Getting a big name to promote for you is hard enough, but asking him to send a series of 7 emails for your product is asking a bit much, don't you think? So many people will see your sales page, even check it out, but they're just not ready to buy yet.
Now, if the only way these people are going to see YOUR page is because they were on THIS list, well guess what? The chances of them ever seeing your page again are slim to none. Remember, you only had access to THIS person and THIS list, ONE time. You're not afforded the luxury of being able to email them, as with your own list, with multiple follow ups.
The bottom line is this...Getting a big name marketer to promote your product, while certainly a help, is not the answer to YOUR long range business problems. You need to build your business yourself through writing content, generating traffic and simply working hard each and every day.
Now THAT is a novel concept.
To YOUR Success,
Steven Wagenheim
