1) A "work at home" opportunity is just another job.
You have a boss who gives you a task, and you do it. Often these are tasks such as inbound/outbound customer service reps or sales reps. In this case, you can expect to make about $8/hour to $18/hour on average. Is this a wage that will allow you to successfully invest in your child's college fund? Is it going to help you put away $1 million for retirement?
2) A "business opportunity" is literally starting your own business.
There are enormous financial benefits to this, including tax incentives, and unlimited earning potential. Many people are scared by the thought of living life through earning commissions, but that's because most people misunderstand the concept. Earning commission means is that there is no limit to how much you can earn. You income is entirely dependent on the amount of value you add to society. What better way to get paid than by making someone else's life better?
3) The require the same amount of effort
It takes just as much effort to find a legitimate "work at home" opportunity online that will actually pay you consistently as it does to find a legitimate "business opportunity" that fits your personal passion. However, with a business opportunity, you don't have to worry about anyone cutting your paycheck. You do that yourself.
Also consider the challenges in working at home. The thought of working from home may seem fine and dandy, but consider that there are many distractions. Kids, laundry, dishes, TV... You must stay on task. This is often harder than many people realize.
